Architectural Drawing Around Town

In this workshop students focus on learning the conventions of freehand drawing through observing, documenting and analyzing design details. The workshop starts with a discussion of drawing techniques, shading, principals of perspective, space and composition and proceed to drawing selected local buildings and landscapes in downtown Palo Alto and the surrounding area.

Explorations in Drawing

Sketching and drawing are among the most fundamental methods of communication. We are visual learners and we all have the ability to sketch and draw within us as a way of expression. This workshop explores working from life in different colorful media. The morning session includes a botanical study in colored pencil; the afternoon session includes still life studies of vegetables using felt pen and pastel pencils. Open to all levels and ages.

Introduction to Color Pencil Drawing
The workshop explains the basic characteristics and color ranges of the main kinds of color pencils, hard, soft, water soluble and soft pastel varieties. It offers step by step guidance, with visual demonstrations of each key technique - blending, burnishing, shading as well as the basics of composition and perspective and also includes graphite pencil techniques. This is a beginners class for those who always wanted to draw but did not know where to start!

Introduction to Drawing

Welcome to Drawing I! This is a beginner’s course and will focus on the basic fundamentals of drawing. I will explain different terminology, concepts, and art materials. We will start with a focus on line and shape, then value and color with a progression through the materials. Classes
are self paced with minimal lectures and more one on one guidance. By the end of the class, students will have strengthened their ability to interpret what they see onto paper and gain a new mastery of these materials.

Narrative Illustration

Students work on a series of illustrations in various drawing media to tell stories using figures and characters in scenes. Examples of vintage and contemporary illustrators are used for inspiration, with an emphasis on clear storytelling principles and concepts (vs polished final work). Topics covered include pen and ink illustration, sequential art, storyboards, book illustration (in watercolor), character design, hand made zines and using color for mood. Class is open to teens.
